Review: Canon’s Powershot G10 is the latest addition to Canon’s well respected “flagship” G series digital cameras. This camera satisfies even the toughest critics with outstanding build quality and full manual controls, while providing easy to use automatic controls for those who want point and shoot usability. Power users will surely appreciate the inclusion of uncompressed RAW format shooting as well as a powered “hot shoe” for attaching an external flash (sold separately). The Powershot G10 follows many cues from its predecessor, the Powershot G9, with enhancements like a wider 28mm view lens and an improved 3in LCD screen for reviewing photos. There is a tradeoff with having a wide angle lens, however, as you’ll be limited to a 5x zoom (the G9 had a 6x zoom). With 26 shooting modes, the G10’s 14 megapixel sensor matched with Canon’s Digic 4 processor excels in bringing out the detail in a variety of scenes from landscapes to portraits. The excellent optically stabilized lens will provide razor sharp photos and a high maximum aperture, which means ISO levels can be kept low to avoid overly grainy photos. This camera is perhaps the missing link between a cheaper “point and shoot” style camera and a more expensive professional “SLR” style camera. Professionals have used the G series for years as an alternative to bulkier cameras.
